Our loyalties must include the whole human community, the entire planet Earth
Parabola Magazines Facebook status update today:
Human history can be viewed as a slowly dawning awareness that we are members of a larger group. Initially our loyalties were to ourselves and our immediate family, next, to bands of wandering hunter-gatherers, then to tribes, small settlements, city-states, nations.
We have broadened the circle of those we love. We have now organized what are modestly described as super-powers, which include groups of people from divergent ethnic and cultural backgrounds working in some sense together — surely a humanizing and character building experience. If we are to survive, our loyalties must be broadened further, to include the whole human community, the entire planet Earth.
Many of those who run the nations will find this idea unpleasant. They will fear the loss of power. We will hear much about treason and disloyalty. Rich nation-states will have to share their wealth with poor ones. But the choice, as H. G. Wells once said in a different context, is clearly the universe or nothing.
–Carl Sagan, "Cosmos," Random House, 1980, p. 339

in the pines...
in a matter of ten minutes on saturday afternoon we'd made the decision to jump in the car, had an overnight bag packed with enough for everyone in our little family, loaded up the boys and hit the road. andrey had come home early from what we thought would be a weekend spent working. seattle had been calling to me for months and i couldn't take it one more day.
i've been surprisingly responsible since lucas started kindergarten. we haven't travelled on a whim like that since last summer. i was beginning to get stir crazy. the daily phone calls from my mother started to sound something like this:
cath: hi, linny! how's things today?!
me: we're in the tri-cities. still.
some days the boys and i will pull up to andrey's job site with the road trip tunes on loud hoping we can tempt him into running away with us - always ending up with a kiss on the cheek for everyone and just enough time to get lucas to school by the first bell.
but not on saturday.
he was easily convinced by promises of fresh sushi.
and a cuppa morning starbucks on the pier.
we spent the entire day on sunday wandering around my city. and that city - she even rained for me. because despite what they say - it doesn't always rain in seattle. the sweet little sprinkling was a lucky one and only added to my happiness. it meant buying an umbrella.
and hopping in city puddles.
we rode the monorail from the seattle center to westlake and then wandered a few blocks to pikes. we drove through the u-district and i replayed some of my happiest lindsay memories there. when the babes started to doze off - we took the scenic highway through the pines and ended up in snoqualmie for a mini hike in the misty rain with the wild ferns. we buckled ourselves back in as the sun started to go down and kurt sang me and my sleepy boys all the way home at the top of his lungs.
the magic in an unplanned adventure is just what i needed. just what i needed.
i can hardly wait to do it again.

A Mini Mondrian Moment
Hello pen friends! I have been dreadfully busy with the entire packing/sorting/throwing out/moving thing, but I have not forgotten about the Mini Mondrian contest! So, without further delay...
These 5 lovely postcards were all of the entries that I received. It took some thought to choose which person won the tiny painting (and other assorted goodies). But... As one of the first post cards I received for the contest, and definitely one that stuck in my mind, the winning postcard is shown below. Thank you all for entering!

It's not a wonder why its so expensive, and babies sure love it. It's too bad more things weren't made with such care.
Get out and play!
The opposite of play is not work. It’s depression. Brian Sutton-Smith
A reminder to get out and play! Or stay in and play. Just include a little play in your life day to day if you can.
Get giddy, be wacky, and have fun! There's lot's of research to support the benefit of play.
It gives our immune system a boost, gives us vitality and clarity, releases endorphins, and is HUGE for stress reduction. Its a great investment for our well being much like yoga. And remember: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." There is truth to that old saying. Happy Spring! Giddy up and play! And by doing so you may even encourage others to do the same. its sort of contageous ;=) Namaste.

Wishing you all a very Happy Mothers Day
A few of my favourite Mothers Day quotes.

My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.
George Washington
No one in the world can take the place of your mother. Right or wrong, from her viewpoint you are always right. She may scold you for little things, but never for the big ones.
Harry Truman
My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.
Mark Twain
A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest. Irish Proverb
My mother is a poem
I'll never be able to write ,
though everything I write
is a poem to my mother.

Without getting into any gory details I'd really like to say thanks to so many of you. Friends, family and students alike. You know who you are (and there are lot's of you).
These past weeks have been a difficult time in my life and you all mean the world.
And my partner Silas thanks you too.
Ahh..life. We all have these periods. Thanks for making me smile through it all. :) None of us gets out of here unscathed and while at times bittersweet, it is still a beautiful world. And mostly because of friends like you.

Why we practice
The question we need to ask ourselves is whether there is any place we can stand in ourselves where we can look at all that’s happening around us without freaking out, where we can be quiet enough to hear our predicament, and where we can begin to find ways of acting that are at least not contributing to further destabilization.
–Ram Dass

Guilty
Ok. I am guilty.
I had a large number of introductory letters to send out. My left hand has been aching all day and I was not prepared to write them all by hand. I cheated.
Each of these letters going out today have a letter inside a card. Each card is the same. Each letter is the same. But the thought and sentiment is all the same!
Have you ever "cheated" in your mail?

i have enough.
all of a sudden - i have a full calendar.
daily to-do's.
a ringing phone.
i am stepping outside of my comfort zone.
i am being brave.
and all of a sudden - i have all the time that i need.
i am up with the sun.
moving and doing.
being present.
i have more patience.
i have the energy to be what they need.
i have a clear head.
a full heart.
i have a new calling.
Maurice Sendak.
I bought these envelopes from the lovely Missive Maven some time ago. I have debated on using them many times, but honestly, I couldn't be brought to actually cover the art with a label and stamp. When the news came this morning that Maurice Sendak, author of Where The Wild Things Are had passed away, I actually had to take a moment.
Much of the reason that I love books comes from his beautifully written and illustrated books. He wrote not for children, but for a children's interests. He didn't shy away from the more 'adult' topics and emotions, but he cleverly disguised them in a way that children would understand them. He didn't have to be vulgar or pander to them. He wrote and we listened. And we knew.
I still don't know if I will ever use these envelopes. But one thing is for sure... it was certainly nice to be King of the Wild Things for a time.

... Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye and sailed back over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day and into the night of his very own room where he found his supper waiting for him and it was still hot.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday May 14th at 6:45 pm. We will meet at the Culinaria on the mezzanine level.

I know I've been a lazy blogger these past weeks...
posting lots of you tube video's and quotes and not much more but...here's another one! haha! I couldn't resist. A huge thank you to a long time student of mine I cherish beyond words Carol for bringing this video to my attention. I thought I'd share too. Miracles happen in yoga class every single day and yoga really is for e-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y. It's all in finding the right class and practice for "you". Us yoga teachers get to see students blossom in every single class, and thats what keeps us doing what we do (it sure isn't the money)!
It's better than money. So much better than money. The only thing this video is missing is a scan of the guys brain. I'd love to see it. Weight loss completely aside, this guy got his life back. Yoga is self care in the highest sense of the word. Send yourself and the people you love to yoga. There's no reason to wait.

Spring Time in Tahoe! Loving it
From spring shredding at Kirkwood with some of my favorite people, and biking to the beach, this new season is glorious. I am having a hard time transitioning, "What am I supposed to do with my life if I can't snowboard everyday?" Tough life right!
I am excited to start DH biking when all the trails clear of snow, which will be pretty soon. Planning to build a split board soon so I can test it out this spring.
My third day at the beach was great! Had a blast with the ladies. Another fun day with my Schwinn... your one of my best friends! Thanks Josh ;)

an experiment
we made slime!
+ it was a hit.
happiest boys ever.
+++
i found several recipes on pinterest.
we decided to go with this one.
pour your glue into a bowl.
(we used 2 - 4oz. bottles so that both of my boys could do the pouring)
fill the empty glue bottles up with water.
give it a little shake before pouring the water into the bowl.
stir it up and add a drop or two of food coloring.
we went with gavin's fave - GREEN!
add 1 tsp. of borax to 1/2 cup of warm water.
slowly add the borax solution to your bowl. keep stirring!
your slime will develop quickly,
you'll need to use your hands to finish mixing it.
have fun!
